Azerbaijani court not acquits chief editor charged of high treason

Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec. 26 / Trend , K.Zarbaliyeva/ Azerbaijani court has kept in power a juridical decision on a chief editor charged of high treason.

A trial on an appeal case of Novruzali Mammadov, chief editor of Tolishi Sado newspaper and former head of Department of the National Academy of Sciences Linguistic Institute, and Elman Guliyev, former employee of the department, finished at Baku Appeal Court on Dec. 26.

Public Prosecutor asked the court to keep the decision in power and to reject the appeal at the meeting on Dec. 26, Ramiz Mammadov, Mammadov's lawyer, told Trend .

The trial decided to reject the appeal and to keep in power the decision of the Serious Crime Court.

The lawyer said that he would lodge a cassation appeal at the Supreme Court.

If the Supreme Court's examination is biased, the case will be sent to the European Court for Human Rights, Mammadov said.

The appeal asked to acquit Mammadov.

Mammadov, the editor-in-chief of the newspaper and head of Department of the National Academy of Sciences Linguistic Institute, and Guliyev, the official of the newspaper, were arrested early Feb. in 2007.

The court sentenced Mammadov to 10-year imprisonment and Guliyev - to six-year imprisonment. They were charged of Articles 274 (high treason) and 283 (spread of national, racial and religious animosity) of the Azerbaijani Criminal Code.
