Stalin’s death commemorated in Azerbaijan

Georgian residents in Alibayli and Gakhingiloy in Azerbaijan's Gakh region visited former Soviet leader Joseph Stalin's monument to commemorate the anniversary of his death.

Stalin died on March 5, 1953.

Stalin's monument was erected in Alibayli upon the initiative of Georgian resident Joseph Amzashvili, local residents said. A bottle of wine was placed inside the monument.

Amazashvili headed the Alibayli Village Administration during the Soviet period.

Gakh residents visit Stalin's monument on March 5 every year.

The Georgian residents protect Stalin's monument and conduct repairs year-round.

Gakh is located in northwestern Azerbaijan.

Stalin was born in Gori, Georgia on Dec. 9, 1879. He was elected the secretary general of the Soviet Central Committee in April 1922. Stalin held the position until 1953.
