The Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has emphasized Syria's direct interest in Iraq's security and stability, Syria's SANA news agency reports, according to Press TV.

President Assad made the remarks in a meeting with the visiting EU Foreign Policy Chief, Javier Solana in Damascus on Sunday.

He emphasized Syria's efforts to achieve just and comprehensive peace in the region on the basis of international legitimate resolutions.

Solana for his part told reporters that he had 'good talks' with Assad, adding that a partnership agreement between Syria and the EU will be signed by the end of current year.

Solana arrived in Damascus on Sunday, which is his third visit to Syria this year. He also met with the Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem.
