OSCE launches Civic Action for Security and Environment Programme in Azerbaijan

The OSCE launched Civic Action for Security and Environment (CASE) Programme in Azerbaijan.

The project will be funded by Statoil and the Government of Austria and involves the allocation of small grants to a maximum of 10 000 euros for projects aimed at protecting the environment.

The Programme is funded by Statoil and the Government of Austria and envisages providing small grants in maximum amount of €10,000 to address environmental and security challenges.

"CASE encourages partnerships and networking between a wide spectrum of civil society organizations, the private sector and academia so that they can pool resources and build on their strengths and expertise to effectively address complex environment and security challenges," said Melissa Stone, the Deputy Head of the OSCE Office in Baku.

The work under the project will be implemented in accordance with the priorities of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, said the official of department for environmental policy of the Ministry, Amil Safiyev.

According to him, the priorities of the Ministry of Ecology for 2010, which was declared the Year of Ecology, is the purification of oil-polluted lands of the Absheron Peninsula, the prevention of desertification and conduct greening, water purification, emissions control.

The project aims to promote cooperation between NGOs and governments in the activities on environmental protection, said Safiyev.
