The Norwegian Embassy and U.S. Embassy have raised with the Azerbaijani government concerns about the situation in the Nakhchivani village of Bananyar.
In an effort to better understand the situation, diplomats from both embassies traveled to Bananyar Jan. 13, but a group stopped their vehicle as it entered the village, verbally threatened them and forced them to leave before any contacts with village residents were made, the statement says.
"We jointly call upon the government to fully investigate the incidents in Bananyar village and to provide protection to foreign diplomats working in Azerbaijan," the statement says.
The media reported that, police and residents of the Benenyar village clashed on Ashura Day Dec.28 and that several people were arrested.
