Secularity is the key to a modern state, Turkish President Abdullah Gul was quoted as saying by Anadolu news agency.
"Worldliness - a pledge of the modern state," he added.
According to the president, the Turkish Constitution attaches great importance to freedom of religion and conscience. However, under the Constitution, the state is based not on religious principles, he said.
