Azerbaijan, Baku, June 7 / Trend E. Ostapenko /

NGOs, research institutes, consulting companies and other interested organizations are invited to apply for a pilot project to examine the issue of illegal logging in Azerbaijan under the EU-funded Forest Law Enforcement and Governance (FLEG) programme, ENPI reported.

The case study will look into the situation in the Balaken-Zagatala transboundary region.

The pilot project in Azerbaijan will aim to build capacity and thus help the forestry sector move toward EU standards using the European experience.  More specifically, the task will be to work out FLEG indicators using various techniques including remote sensing tools.

The project will also aim to develop and implement training programmes for the lawyers, foresters, local authorities and rural communities that would help prevent illegal logging and promote sustainable using of local forest.

The EU-funded Forest Law Enforcement and Governance (FLEG) programme worth €6 million supports governments, civil society and the private sector in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine in the development of sound and sustainable forest management practices, including the prevention of illegal forestry activities.
