Iranian scientists have created and tested artificial blood, the Mehr news agency reported today.

Experiments have been successfully carried out on animals, said Hussein Hanifi, who heads a research project on artificial blood production.

Hanifi said the blood can be frozen and is compatible with all blood types.

"We have achieved artificial hemoglobin by using nanoparticles," he said.

Each year, Iran requires 7 million units of blood.
