Azerbaijan, Baku, Jan. 17 / Trend M. Aliyev /
The newspaper "Ses" laid the foundation of a healthy opposition in Azerbaijan in hard conditions of early 1990s, editor-in-chief of this publication, Bahruz Guliyev, told Trend.
He said that Ses, celebrating its 20th anniversary one of these days, amid a wave of the popular movement and fragmentation threatened to Azerbaijan, united admirers of Heydar Aliyev.
"As one of 3-4 independent newspapers of that time, roughly 27,000-30,000 Ses editions were published. It laid the foundation for a healthy opposition. Being in opposition, the main ideology of our newspaper was propaganda of Azerbaijanism," Guliyev said.
Ses newspaper was registered in 1990. It operated as the Azerbaijani Charitable Foundation "Elince" on January 11, 1991.
He said that Ses was a basis for creating the "New Azerbaijan" party.
"The newspaper published an appeal of 91 representatives of the intelligentsia of the country to national leader Heydar Aliyev and Heydar Aliyev's response to this appeal on Oct. 16, 1991. It was a great historical mission in the direction of the country's withdrawal from a difficult situation," Guliyev said.
He said that Ses played a significant role in spreading the ideology of New Azerbaijan Party in the whole country
"Then it was very difficult to play the role of free press. Those years, members of our newspaper have not changed their ideals in spite of all the risks. Ses began to promote a healthy and useful idea of the New Azerbaijan Party for the society. I think that the newspaper made historical, and at the same time, a decent way, " Guliyev said.
