Religious organizations may be subordinate to single center

Azerbaijan, Baku, June 1 / Trend, M. Aliyev /

Amendments on making religious organizations subordinate to a single center in Azerbaijan are expected to be made to the Law on Freedom of Religion, Parliamentary Human Rights Committee member Ilyas Ismayilov told Trend.

The proposed addition to the law says Islamic religious organizations operating in Azerbaijan must submit a report on their activity to the Caucasus Muslims Office (CMO). Non-Islamic religious organizations should submit their reports to the State Committee for Religious Organizations and the Justice Ministry.

Ismayilov said according to the envisaged additions to the law, religious organizations can undertake activities only in religious service places indicated as a legal address in the documents submitted for state registration.

The proposed draft law states that religious centers should inform the relevant executive authorities about changes to their structures, Ismayilov said.

The draft law submitted to the parliament for discussion indicates that religious buildings and other property under state ownership can be transferred to religious organizations for free use.

The draft law envisages 19 amendments to the relevant articles of the law.

The Law on religious freedom was adopted in 1992.
