Law enforcement bodies of Azerbaijan have detained and prosecuted 22 foreigners involved in drug trafficking in the first six months of 2011.

They seized 89,615 kilograms of various drugs, the State Commission on Drug Enforcement and Drug Trafficking reported.

About 27 foreigners were sued criminally responsible the same period last year for such crimes with 130,415 kilograms of drugs withdrawn.

The convicted included nine Iranian nationals, six Russian citizens, four citizens of Georgia, and one citizen each of Ukraine, Turkmenistan and Afghanistan.

In this period the country registered 1,702 drug-related crimes, including 584 cases drugs sale, 1,066 drug storage, 47 cultivation of narcotic plants, and five different crimes.
The country registered 1,837 crimes of this kind over the same period of last year.
A total of 436,363 kilograms of various drugs was seized in the first half of 2011, including more than 196 kilograms of marijuana, over 155 kilograms of hashish, and over 58 kilograms of heroin.

In this period 214.310 tons of drugs of plant origin was annihilated.

Last year the number of drug addicts in Azerbaijan increased by 2,500.

A total of 25,500 addicts have been officially registered, including over 500 women. Over 3,119 drug users are aged between 18 and 29, 5,564 between 30 and 39.
