Azerbaijan has not seen a growth in the number of HIV infections over the past three years, Infectious Disease Specialist at the WHO Azerbaijan Office Javahir Suleymanova told journalists at a briefing in Baku today.

Azerbaijan records a HIV infection among the risk groups, she said.

About $6 billion are required to prevent the spread and treatment of HIV/AIDS on a global scale, HIV/AIDS Programme Manager for the World Health Organization Regional Office Martin Donoghoe said at a briefing in Baku.

Some 34 million HIV / AIDS infected people live in the world. The figure is close to 2 million people in Europe.

"Azerbaijan carries out antiretroviral treatment of this infection for people most in need. The number of such people is about 1,100 people," Suleymanova said.
She said Azerbaijan has registered about 3,000 HIV-infected patients to date.
