"Round table" with participation of Azerbaijani and Russian scholars and political scientists, dedicated to the Year of Russian history has been held at Trend Agency today.
Initiators of the cycle of events are History Faculty of Moscow State University (MSU), the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Caucasus Bulletin news and analytical agency and "North-South" Center for Political Science
Dean of the History Faculty of Moscow State University, Corresponding Member of RAS, Professor Sergey Karpov greeted the audience via video-message.
On the Russian side the "round table" was attended by Director General of information and analytical centre of the MSU Alexey Vlasov (moderator), associate professor of the MSU Ismail Agakishiyev, director of the Center for Socio-Political Research Vladimir Yevseyev and on the Azerbaijani side - political scientists Fikret Sadikhov and Ilgar Velizade, head of "Novosti-Azerbaijan" news agency Gulnara Mammadzadeh and head of "Interfax-Azerbaijan" Alexander Ivanov.
The participants unanimously expressed the desire to preserve the common historical space through the creation of new venues for dialogue, the development of mechanisms for research and data communication.
Ms Mammadzadeh said after the collapse of the Soviet Union there have been many significant events due to which Azerbaijan and Russia can today build their relationship again.
"Expert communities of both countries should combine their efforts for better understanding of the coexistence in the common historical space," she noted.
Mr Agakishiyev said balanced and impartial coverage of historical facts is very important for understanding the past and finding answers to many questions, which to date has not been clarified.
"Today, there are many alumni of Moscow State University history, living in Baku who affect the country's political life, but in Russia there are few people who have a true and complete picture of the nations of the former Soviet Union who lived side by side with the Russians for many years," he said.
He said it's necessary to establish joint work of historians in order that present generation would leave for posterity a fair presentation of historical facts.
Political scientist Sadikhov believes that today relations between Russia and Azerbaijan are in the nature of the strategic partnership not only between the leaders of countries, but also between political elites and ordinary people.
Mr Evseev agreed with him, noting that Russia and Azerbaijan have many areas for cooperation, and this is a good basis for the development of relations between the two countries.
