Azerbaijan's National Security Ministry detained two Azerbaijani citizens suspected of arson of a mosque in the Garachukhur township of Baku, a message from the ministry's public affairs center said Dec. 1.
The message said that two persons - Namig Nasibov and Elnur Alakbarov were detained.
During the arrest, a Makarov pistol and eight cartridges for it were seized from Nasibov, and a Smith & Wesson revolver was seized from Alakbarov.
Nasibov and Alakbarov were detained in the Bilajari township of the Binagadi district of Baku.
The investigation revealed that in August-September 2014, Namig Nasibov took part in fighting in Syria on the territories controlled by the terrorist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
After returning from the Syrian city of Kobani, Nasibov together with Alakbarov created an informal organization in Azerbaijan, called Yekbun, which is a wing of the PKK, and began to attract people to it.
The message said that Nasibov and Alakbarov, on behalf of the organization created by them, called for holding protests in Baku through social networks.
They also planned to hold an open demonstration of hate towards the followers of Sunni Islam, who they regarded as radicals.
Aside from that, they planned to organize terrorist attacks in crowded areas in order to sow panic among them, the message said.
The message said that Nasibov and Alakbarov, in order to carry out their plan, taking several taxis on evening Nov. 25, 2014 came to the Garachukhur township. There they bought 10 liters of gasoline at different gas stations.
They used the bought gasoline to prepare an incendiary mixture, which was bottled, the message said.
On Nov. 26, at about 02:04 (UTC/GMT +4 hours), Nasibov and Alakbarov, breaking the entrance and rear doors of the mosque in the township, set a fire and threw bottles of incendiary mixture into it, and then fled the crime scene.
The investigative-operational measures are underway to investigate all the details of the case and establish its other defendants, the message said.
Arrest was chosen as a measure of restraint with regard to both suspects.
