Baku, Azerbaijan, Aug. 1

Trend:

An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale hit an area in Azerbaijan's Imishli district on approximately 08:47 (local Baku time, GMT+4), Azerbaijan's Seismology Center told Trend.

No information yet on the damage and casualties from the Azerbaijani side.

There are no grounds for the population’s concern regarding the possibility of strong tremors in the areas hit by the earthquake, Gurban Yetirmishli, director of the center, said.

This is due to the fact that the area is not a seismic one, according to the center.

Yetirmishli added that all the energy was released in the result of the main tremor, which occurred on Aug. 1 morning.

“A number of aftershocks were recorded after that tremor, and weak aftershocks will continue throughout the day,” he said. “Earthquakes, which historically occurred in this area, were not stronger than the one occurred on Aug. 1 morning.”

Meanwhile, the earthquake was also felt in Iran's city of Parsabad.

The governor of Parsabad, Akbar Samadi told the Fars News Agency that a 62-year old man died from a heart attack during the tremors. He added that two more people got injured.
