Assistant to Azerbaijani president: Resumption of subway, shopping centers activities could lead to COVID-19 cases increase

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Aug. 3

By Elchin Mehdiyev – Trend:

The resumption of Baku Metro activities may accelerate coronavirus spread in Azerbaijan, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan, Head of Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration Hikmat Hajiyev said.

Hajiyev made the remark at the briefing of the Operational Headquarters under the Azerbaijani Cabinet of Ministers, Trend reports on Aug. 3.

“The issue of resuming the Baku Metro activities is being discussed with the participation of experts,” assistant to the president said.

"The conclusions of experts say that the virus could start rapidly spreading due to the general ventilation system at the subway stations,” Hajiyev added. “For this reason, the resumption of the subway activity is not considered appropriate yet."

The assistant to the president added that the Baku Transport Agency was instructed to take measures to increase the number of operated buses during peak hours.

Hajiyev added that the opening of malls and big shopping centers may also accelerate the spread of the virus.

"The rate of coronavirus spreading may greatly increase as a big number of people gather in big shopping centers," Hajiyev said.
