AZERI EMBASSY IN GEORGIA TAKES CONVICTION OF TELMAN HASSANOV UNDER CONTROL

The Azerbaijani embassy in Georgia takes under control the conviction of Telman Hassanov, the resident of the Vakhtangisi village, Gardabani region, Elkhan Polukhov, the press-secretary of the embassy told Trend.

The Polukhiov noted that Hassanov was put into prison 1 of Tbilisi city to serve his 3-month term at the decision of the Gardabani region court. “Hassanov said in an interview to Georgian TV channels that he was arrested for counteraction to corruption,” the diplomat stressed. According to Polukhov, the convicted person is disabled and has got some problems with health.

The press secretary noted that Hassanov was Azerbaijani by nationality and the embassy was able to address to Georgian law-enforcement bodies for explanation in this regard.

The Georgian citizens by Azerbaijani origin living in the Vakhtangisi village held a protest action and blocked the road on 16 September. The participants of the action accused the authorities of violation of national minorities’ rights.

The employees of the law-enforcement bodies asked the participants of the actions to unblock the road, but they refused. Hassanov showed resistance to the police and was arrested. He went on hunger-strike after the court decision.
