The U.S. Department of State made a statement with regards to Azerbaijanis living in Iran. In the statement it emphasized the pressure on Azerbaijanis living in Iran as a part of the persecution in relation with those who wish to uphold their rights, Trend reports quoting ANV TV.
In May of this year, Azerbaijanis were attacked, intimidated and arrested during the peaceful demonstration. In addition, education in the Azeri language has been forbidden at Iranian schools. The demonstrators are persecuted and detained for their language and cultural freedom rights. The Department announced that the repression of the Iranian regime with regard to Azerbaijanis, Kurds and ethical Arabs are directed against religious minorities, students, women, trade unions and journalists it was stated in the document.
The Department of State urges the Iranian Government to respect the rights of its citizens and release those people who have been detained.
