UN Special Rapporteur Holds Meetings in Baku – version 2

Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr S. Ilhamgizi / The United Nations (UN) Special Rapporteur on Protection and Promoting of Freedom of Expression and Opinion, Ambeyi Ligabo, who is on visit in Baku, met with the Azerbaijani Interior Minister, General-Colonel Ramil Usubov, on 25 April.

The Minister informed the UN representative on social and political processes in Azerbaijan, legislative and democratic reforms carried out in the country, and crime enforcement. Usubov noted that due to rough handling with the citizens, as well as groundless detention, bringing to account, and illegal search 522 employees of the Interior Ministry organizations were punished in 2002-2006, with 33 of them made answerable and 85 dismissed from the organizations.

The Minister added that in 2001-2006 the Investigation Department of the Interior Ministry held investigations on 106 violations of the law by police officers. Some 18 facts were proved and the guilty officers were punished.
