Detained Azerbaijani Journalists May be Pardoned on National Press Day - Senior State Official

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr Trend E.Huseynli / Ali Hasanov, the head of the Public and Political Department of the Azerbaijani President's Executive Power, stated on 21 June that detained Azerbaijani journalists may be pardoned in connection to the forthcoming National Press Day.

At present the situation in regards to the detained journalists is being studied.

"Up to now, arrested journalists were repeatedly released by the head of state. Unfortunately, this policy does not result in their reformation and willingness to observe the law in their future activities," Hasanov added.

He noted that the journalists see the pardon as their victory. However, pardon is a chance for them to return to the right path.

Azerbaijan marks National Press Day on 22 July. At present seven journalists are in custody in the country.
