Azerbaijan, Baku / corr. Trend K.Zarbaliyeva / There are plans to build detention centres in the regions of Azerbaijan, where Appeal Courts function. The Deputy Justice Minister and Chief of the Penal System of Azerbaijan, Nazim Alakparov, stressed in his exclusive interview with Trend that as Sumgayt is located near Baku, they do not intend to construct centres there. "There is detention centre No 2 in Ganja and No 1 and 3 in Baku. New corrective institutions are being constructed in Sheky and Lankaran. Detention centres will be constructed at those institutions. In addition, detention centres will be built in Alibayramly," the Deputy Minister said. According to him, after detention centres are constructed and put into operation, the number of prisoners in detention centres in Baku will significantly decrease. The detention centre No 3 in Shuvalan district of Baku city will be removed.

Alakparov said that estimates for the new prisons are being devised. "The estimate documents will be submitted to us in August. Later a tender will be announced for the construction of the prison. Certain finances have already been allocated. Construction will commence by the end of the year. The date of completion of the construction will depend on the proposals of the construction companies. Two institutions will be constructed at the prison. Life-imprisonment prisoners and prisoners of other categories will be detained separately," Alakparov concluded.
