Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr K. Zarbaliyeva / Dayanat Karimov, an inmate accused in the assassination of the Azerbaijani Parliament Vice-Speaker Afiaddin Jalilov, is being examined after sustaining an injury two months ago during physical exercise.
Karimov, who was sentenced to life imprisonment, was finally sent to a health institution last week, and is currently being examined, according to the head of the Health Protection Central Department of Azerbaijan Justice Ministry, Rafael Mehdiyev.
Karimov displays symptoms of post-traumatic arthritis in his left knee, Mehdiyev said. "He injured his leg two months ago during physical exercises he was doing in his cell. He received treatment in the medical part of the prison and has been sent to a patient-care institution for additional examination," Mehdiyev said.
After examination and treatment, Karimov will be returned to prison.
Karimov endured torture during his arrest and his current leg pain is connected with that, Karimov's sister, Nubar Gasymova, said. Karimov does not agree with changing the death penalty to the still conservative life imprisonment, and has applied to the Garadag Region Court and Azerbaijan Supreme Court to reduce his term to fifteen years.
