Azerbaijan, Baku / corr A. Gasymova / The Council of Europe's Commissar on Human Rights, Thomas Hummerberg, will discuss the mass media situation with Azerbaijani President, Ilham Aliyev, Hummerberg said to journalists in Baku on 3 September.
"During the meeting with the Azerbaijani President, we will discuss the media situation, as well as informing the President of suggestions by the Council of Europe (CE) regarding human rights," Hummerberg said.
After the meeting with the representatives of civil community in Azerbaijan, Hummerberg said that they had focused on the human rights situation, children's rights, and in particularly the rights of juvenile delinquents and women. The activities of NGO's and the media situation were discussed.
"In December the Azerbaijani Government adopted an action plan and we will see how this is being implemented," the Commissar said.
Within his five-day visit to Azerbaijan the Commissar is expected to meet with the President, MPs, Ministers of Justice, Internal Affairs, National Security and Health, the head of the Committee on Refugees and Internally Displaced People, and Ombudswoman.
As a result of the Commissar's visit to Azerbaijan, a report will be developed and will be submitted to the CE Cabinet of Ministers for consideration.
"For the time being I do not have precise ideas on the state of human rights in Azerbaijan. This will only be clear after my visit comes to an end," Hummerberg added.
