Throughput capacity of Azerbaijan’s Baku port may be increased

The revenues of Azerbaijan’s Baku International Sea Trade Port from transshipment of goods amounted to 30.7 million manat ($18.05 million) in 2020, Trend reports referring to the report of the Azerbaijani Cabinet of Ministers for the last year.

During the reporting period, the revenues of the port increased by 37 percent compared to 2019.

The port increased the transshipment of cargo by 19.6 percent up to 4.8 million tons in 2020, while 87.7 percent of all cargo transportation accounted for transit cargo, the report said.

The port also increased the transshipment of containers compared to last year by 15.2 percent or up to 40,300 TEU. TIR transshipment in the direction of Baku - Turkmenbashi - Baku reached 27,900 units while in the direction of Baku - Kuryk - Baku – 15,300 units.

The ferry terminal of the port handled about 37,400 rail cars in 2020, which is 15.2 percent less than in 2019.

"Some 19,800 rail cars were transported along the Baku - Turkmenbashi – Baku route, 17,600 rail cars – along with the Baku - Kuryk – Baku route.

At present, a ferry terminal and a Ro-Ro terminal are operating in the Alat settlement on a 400 hectare-area, which were put into operation as part of the first stage of construction work. The throughput capacity of the port is 15 million tons of dry cargo and 100,000 containers per year.

After the completion of the second stage, the transshipment of cargo by the port will increase up to 17 million tons of cargo and 150,000 containers while at the third stage - up to 25 million tons of cargo and one million containers.
