Azerbaijan to have two routes to Turkey within BTK corridor

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 15

By Sadraddin Aghjayev – Trend:

Azerbaijan will have two routes to Turkey within the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) corridor - through Tbilisi and Nakhchivan, Director General of the Baku Sea Trade Port Taleh Ziyadov said in an interview with foreign media, Trend reports on May 15.

According to Ziyadov, each new route will provide additional opportunities for the transportation of goods.

He noted that Azerbaijan's liberation of its occupied territories (from Armenian occupation as a result of the Second Karabakh war from late Sept. through early Nov.2020) made possible to restore the Baku-Alat-Horadiz-Ordubad-Julfa-Nakhchivan railway.

This line, partially passing through the territory of Armenia, was dismantled in the 1990s on the section between Ordubad city (Azerbaijan's Nakhchivan) and Horadiz (settlement in Fuzuli district), the CEO added.

Besides, according to him, the restoration of this line will open a new road to Iran.

"In Soviet times, the Julfa station (in Nakhchivan) was a border zone on the way to Iran and handled more than three million tons of cargo annually. In the future, it’s planned to create a direct connection between Nakhchivan and Turkey in the direction of the city of Kars to connect this branch with the BTK railway corridor,” summed up Ziyadov.
