Work continues on project to build solar power plant in Azerbaijan - bp

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Nov. 24

By Khagan Isayev - Trend:

Work is underway within an executive agreement on the evaluation and implementation of a project to build a 240MW solar power plant in Azerbaijan’s Zangilan-Jabrayil zone, signed between the country’s Energy Ministry and bp, the company told Trend.

“We are developing this project with the Ministry of Energy of Azerbaijan. This work covers the technical and commercial evaluation of the project, plant design, and, overall, provision of all necessary assessments for the final investment decision,” the company said.

“In Azerbaijan, bp has a history of almost 30 years of safe and reliable operatorship of energy projects. Based on this experience, we’ll be also able to jointly assess opportunities for successful cooperation and partnership in the field of renewable energy and make an important contribution to Azerbaijan’s renewable energy transition efforts,” the company noted. “Globally bp intends to significantly increase our investments in renewables and is exploring new opportunities in this field and already has established long and successful partnerships.”

The agreement was signed within the strategic decision on the establishment of a "green energy" zone in Azerbaijan’s territories liberated from Armenian occupation [in the 2020 Second Karabakh War, including Zangilan and Jabrayil districts] and the countrywide development of the renewable energy sector, and the country’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions by 35 percent by 2030.

Under the executive agreement, it’s planned to establish a steering committee to carry out activities related to the technical and commercial evaluation of the solar energy project, the plant design, the financial provision, and the making of the final investment decision.
