BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 1. EU countries imported 8,100 tons of hazelnuts worth 44.6 million euro from Azerbaijan in 2023, the statistical office of the EU (Eurostat) told Trend.
Eurostat's data shows that this is 19.9 percent less in volume terms and 23.2 percent less in value terms year on year.
Last year, Azerbaijan exported 4,200 tons of hazelnuts to Germany (an increase of 71.4 percent) for 23.4 million euro (an increase of 64.1 percent), 2,500 tons to Italy (a loss of 2.8 times) worth 14 million euro (a decrease of 2.9 times), and 500 tons to Poland (an increase of 81.8 percent) worth 2.7 million euro (an increase of 95.6 percent).
Notably, EU countries imported 10,060 tons of hazelnuts from Azerbaijan in 2022 (a 42.7 percent rise over 2021) for a total value of 58.1 million euro (a 44.5 percent increase).
The International Nut and Dried Fruit Council for the 2022–2023 season noted that Azerbaijan ranks 4th among the world producers of hazelnuts.
In general, Azerbaijan produced 24,000 tons of peeled hazelnuts during the reporting period. The country's share of world production was four percent. The top three included Türkiye (415,300 tons, or 71 percent), Italy (38,700 tons, or seven percent), and the US (31,900 tons, or five percent).
