BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 4. Science can provide the evidence base for climate action, Deputy Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Ermira Fida said during the opening of the final day of the international conference within "Climate Action Week" in Baku (BCAW24), Trend reports.

"The recent catastrophic extreme weather events, notably Hurricane Helen, which impacted the southeastern United States and garnered international attention, underscore the escalating effects of climate change. This situation impacts millions and highlights the pressing necessity for prompt intervention.

A substantial disparity is seen between aspirations and tangible worldwide efforts to address climate change. Science can furnish the evidentiary foundation for devising remedies; nevertheless, it is unable by itself to close the chasm caused by political inaction. It is the responsibility of legislators to convert scientific evidence into tangible actions," she emphasized.

According to her, the IPCC has been instrumental in influencing the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) process by supplying scientific rationale for the augmentation of climate policies and the attainment of international agreements.

"Since the first assessment report of the IPCC in 1990, which contributed to the establishment of the UNFCCC, each subsequent report has defined the direction of global climate actions," Fida added.

To note, the BCAW24 being held in Baku for the first time brings together key participants from different spheres: politics, finance, trade, investment, science, art, culture, civil society, and media.

The first half of the week (from September 30 through October 2) was dedicated to discussing climate solutions with government agencies, academia, and the private sector, while the second half (October 3-4) focuses on science, education, arts, culture, and other sectors.
