Uzbekistan and Italy will build a waste processing plant in the Syrdarya region of Uzbekistan, Trend reports with reference to the administration of the Syrdarya region.

The mentioned topic was discussed at the negotiations between the deputy mayor of the region Daniyar Madirimov and the president of the Italian companies Opera and Innovando SRL Paolo de Angelis.

The total project cost is estimated at 40 million euros. The plant will operate on a cluster system, starting from transportation, sorting, and processing of waste to subsequent complete disposal.

It is expected that the implementation of the project will solve the urgent problem of protecting the ecology and the environment in the region.

This is not the first municipal solid waste processing project in Uzbekistan. In June, the South Korean Samdong ENT Co., Ltd. announced plans to build a waste processing cluster in the Samarkand region worth $35 million.

In 2019, Uzbekistan approved a strategy for the management of solid waste for the next ten years.

According to the document, Uzbekistan intends to bring the level of solid waste processing to 60 percent by 2028.

There are 221 solid waste landfills in Uzbekistan, in which more than 80 million tons of waste are placed. Their occupancy rate exceeds 90 percent.
