Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr I. Khalilova / During the 8th meeting in Baku on 28 September, the Azerbaijan-EU Cooperation Committee decided to intensify informal contact between working groups, the head of the Investment Department at the Azerbaijani Economic Development Ministry, Askar Alakbarov, said on 2 October.

"We have economic and political working groups which were formed during the development of the action plan of the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP). They agreed with our suggestion to involve European experts in meetings," Alakbarov said.

He did not rule out the possibility of an informal meeting of the economic working group presided by Azerbaijan to involve the European Commission in Brussels by the end of 2007.

The EU also boosted Azerbaijan's suggestions to establish a new subcommittee on law, freedom and communication, as well as supplementing the committee on energy and transport with issues on the environment.

The work carried out under the implementation of the action plan and the energy memorandum signed last year with the EU was considered at the meeting. The minutes of the 6th meeting of the EU subcommittee on trade, economics and law, as well as the 1st and 2nd meetings of the subcommittee on transport and energy, were approved at the meeting. The discussions touched upon the Nagorno-Karabakh problem, namely EU stated its support for the OSCE Minks Group's efforts to settle the conflict. The EU's actions in connection to this were considered.

The next meeting will be held in Luxemburg on 16 October. The meeting will mainly be dedicated to discussion of political issues, Alakbarov said.
