Azerbaijan, Baku, 6 March / corr. Trend U. Ismayilova/ The cost of foodstuffs in Azerbaijan will rise by 25% due to the Novruz spring holiday, Eyub Huseynov, the head of the Free Consumers Union of Azerbaijan said on 6 March.
"The price rise will take place particularly in foodstuff which is used in cookery during the holiday in line with holiday traditions," Huseynov said. The spring holiday Novruz is usually marked in Azerbaijan on 20-21 March. There is usually a dramatic demand by the consumers for flour, nuts, eggs, yeast, oil, rice and raisins prior to the holiday.
Huseynov said that apart from the 25% rise in 'holiday' products, there will be a 10% rise in meat and vegetable prices.
The price rise in spring will make up 8% of the inflation level of the country. The inflation level will total a minimum of 20% at the end of the year due to the rise of foodstuff prices by 25%.
