State Program to Develop Melioration to Increase Crop Capacity of Azerbaijani Lands

Azerbaijan, Baku, 1 May / corr. Trend S. Babayeva/ The State Program to develop melioration and the water supply in Azerbaijan in 2008-2015 will enable the increase of the crop capacity of the land and to nearly double its production, Ahmad Ahmadzade, the head of Melioration and Water Supply OJSC of Azerbaijan said during the meeting on the project of development of water supply, melioration, irrigation and public utilities under the chairmanship of the President Ilham Aliyev, the official press said on 1 May.

According to Ahmadzade, some 16 reservoir with a capacity of 722mln cu.m and irrigation canals with a length of 825km are expected to be built within the project. Some 43,400 ha of new irrigation land is expected to be put into exploitation, the water supply and melioration of over 385,000 ha irrigation land are expected to be improved and dams of 118km are expected to be built within the program.

The program has been coordinated with the state departments and has been introduced to the President by the Cabinet of Ministers for approval.
