Azerbaijan, Baku, 6 June / corr. Trend I.Khalilova / A new version of the Azerbaijani Customs Code has been presented to the Cabinet of Ministers for consideration, Aydin Aliyev, the chairman of the State Customs Committee (SCC), said. The proposals made by 24 governmental organizations were taken into consideration while designing the Code.
Aliyev considers that it is impossible to discuss this Code during the autumn session of Milli Majlis [Azerbaijan Parliament] because of its large volume.
The improvement of the legislative basis, in line with international standards, is a part of the UNDP and European Union (EU) project to improve the customs service. One of the tasks to ensure durable development of the Azerbaijani customs system was to develop a new version of the Customs Code.
Expert, who had previously worked in Russia and Kazakhstan, was attracted to this project. This Code introduced information technologies, and the main attention was paid to articles, dealing with activities of a Customs employee.
The current version of the Code was adopted in 1997. A five-year program to improve the Customs system (from 2007 to 2011) was confirmed in February 2007. Priorities of this program are the improvement of the logistics base of the customs system, trainings of personnel, strengthening of the customs control system, fulfillment of the fiscal function, struggle against the customs crime and introduction of modern information technology in the customs sphere.
