The Labor Ministry says the number of unemployed in France has risen to 1,957,600 in September, up 0.4 percent from August and 0.8 percent year-on-year, the Associated Press reported.

The ministry says the number of jobless rose 2.5 percent year-on-year for jobseekers aged under 25. This compares with rises of 0.1 percent for those aged 25-49 and 1.5 percent for over-50s.

The ministry did not provide an overall jobless rate in its statement Thursday. Prime Minister Francois Fillon said this month the government is expecting the unemployment rate to grow to 7.4 percent from 7.2 percent.
