Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index opened more than 4 per cent higher Tuesday after big overnight rises in the value of US and European shares, dpa reported.

The blue-chip index stood at 12,979.62 points within five minutes of the market opening Tuesday, up 521.68 points, or 4.19 per cent, on Monday's closing figure.

The rise in share values was triggered by strong overnight performances on European and US markets following the announcement of a US government rescue package to bail out banking giant Citigroup.
