Russian natural gas pumped via Ukraine reached Slovakia on Tuesday, nearly two weeks after a shutdown of Russian supplies to the European Union shuttered country's factories, dpa reported.

Slovak Economy Minister Lubomir Jahnatek told a news conference that gas arrived at a Slovak gas border station at Velke Kapusany.

The central European country of 5.3 million, which fully relies on Russian gas crossing Ukraine, ordered 1,000 companies to cut their gas consumption to a minimum after Russia shut deliveries via Ukraine on January 7.

Slovakia lifted restrictions on firms on Monday after securing daily deliveries of 5 million cubic metres of gas in western Europe.
