Tokyo stocks softer on earnings concerns

Tokyo ended Wednesday morning trading lower after strong gains the previous day as investors retreated on concerns over dire earnings forecasts by leading Japanese companies, dpa reported.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average was down 29.61 points, or 0.37 per cent, to 8,031.46 after posting early following Tuesday's 5-per cent rise.

The broader Topix index of all first section issues also fell 4.64 points, or 0.58 per cent, to 800.85 by mid-trading.

On currency markets at 9 am (0000 GMT), the dollar was quoted at 89.30-35 yen, down from Tuesday's 5 pm quote of 90.02-04 yen.

The euro traded at 1.3210-15 dollars, down from Tuesday's 5 pm quote of 1.3260-63 dollars, and at 118.03-08 yen, from 119.38-42 yen.
