Aircraft engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney Canada said on Thursday that it is sending 1,000 staff back home from its global operations, about 10 percent of its total workforce, Xinhua reported.
The cuts are necessary because of the worldwide economic slowdown, company spokeswoman Nancy German told reporters from headquarters in Longueuil, Quebec.
The layoffs will affect those in the manufacturing sector as well as those who handle the company's administrative and customer- service operations.
Pratt & Whitney Canada is a division of Hartford, Connecticut- based United Technologies. It has 10,000 employees, including 7, 000 in Canada.
