Kazakhstan constructs giant railway

Construction of a new railway line - Eralievo-Kurik starts in the Mangistua region of Kazakhstan, the Kazakh Transport and Communication Ministry reported.

"Constructing Eralievo-Kurik new railway line is one of Kazakhstan's Transport strategy tasks by 2015 approved by the president," Transport and Communication Minister Abelgazi Kusainov said at the opening ceremony of railway construction.

The minister stressed key aims of the project - to create conditions to develop a coastal infrastructure of Kazakhstan's Caspian territory and transport service in the Kurik port. Moreover, the transport minister mentioned the expected from its fulfillment.

"This is developing a cargo region of the Kurik port and coastal infrastructure, providing transportation of the Kazakh cargo to the Caspian Sea and decreasing over-loading from the Aktau sea port," the minister said.

Kusainov said the ministry is strictly controlling construction of the property at the moment.

"At present Astana-AREK company has finished a preparation stage and signed a contract with Moststroyotryad general contractor which launched work at this property," the press-release said.

The concessionaire-company and general contractor have to fulfill the set tasks and launch the railway in the second quarter of 2010.

The construction of the line with 14.4 kilometers of length costs 8.1 billion tenge. The forecast volume of conveyance is 4 million tons in the first year and concession term - by 2030.
