Azerbaijani population ups by 76,000

According to the primary census of the people, the Azerbaijani people number 8.973 million with an increase of 76,000 or 0.9 percent as for Oct. 1, the State Committee on Statistics reported on Oct. 20.

"Number of people increased both through natural processes and through migration,' the committee said.

Men in the country comprise 49 percent of population and women - 51 percent. Some 1,041 women fall to each 1,000 men.

The committee reported that 23 percent of the population is younger than 14 years, 70 percent - a person from 15 to 64 years, seven percent - the person above 65 years. Youth from 14 to 29 years constitute 31.2 percent of the population.

In January - September, 109,500 children were born in Azerbaijan, 401 children per day and 54.1 percent of them are boys and 45.9 percent - girls. Of these, 1,196 children are twins and 18 - triplets.

The birth rate per thousand persons rose from 16.5 percent to 16.6 percent, the mortality rate declined from 6.1 percent to six percent.

Life duration for children born is 72.7 years, including 70 years for boys, 75.4 years for girls.

During nine months in Azerbaijan, 54,600 marriages were concluded. The number of marriages per thousand persons rose from 8.1 percent to 8.2 percent.

An average age for first marriage for men is 27 years and 23 years for women.
