Construction activities on international transport corridors will end in late 2015, Kazakh Transport and Communications Minister Abelgazi Kusainov said Nov. 3.

"The work on the international corridors will end by late 2015," he said at a state meeting, while issuing a report on the development of national transport infrastructure. "The reconstruction of the Western Europe-Western China international transit corridor is the primary project for 2009."

According to the minister, international financial institutions have allocated roughly $3.4 billion to fund the construction of the corridor. The corridor was divided into 33 plots to help local firms participate in the project.

Kusainov added that the ministry announced tenders on several concession projects in the road sector in 2009. The bids on the Almaty-Khorgos and Almaty-Kapchagay projects were opened and concession contracts will be signed by Feb. 1, 2010.

"Full-scale work is scheduled for 2010," Kusainov said. "The construction activities are planned to finish in 2013."

According to the minister, 30,000 kilometers of public roads will be repaired and reconstructed in 2010-2014.
