Britain moves out of recession, official figures confirm

Britain moved out of recession in the final quarter of 2009, official figures published Tuesday showed, DPA reported.

The economy grew by an estimated 0.1 per cent between October and the end of December, 2009, the Office of National Statistics (ONS) said.

Britain was one of the last major economies to move out of recession, after France and Germany declared the end of the slump in the early autumn of last year.

However, analysts said growth was still weak and recovery would be long and slow.

The figures showed that, overall, the British economy slumped by 4.8 per cent last year - the biggest annual contraction since the end of World War II.

The state of the economy will be a major issue at the forthcoming general election in Britain, due by June at the latest.
