Uzbek President Islam Karimov congratulated local farmers on finishing their harvest. They harvested roughly 7 million tons of grain this year, the Presidential Press Service reported.

"We are proud that Uzbekistan has achieved grain self-sufficiency," he said.

Karimov added that the country gathered 286,000 tons of grain more in 2010 than in 2009.Fifty-one centners of grain were gathered from each hectare of irrigated land.

The yield amounted to 53-58 centners per hectare in the Andijan, Bukhara, Kashkadarya, Samarkand and Tashkent regions. The yield exceeded 55-67 centners per hectare in the Pakhtaabad, Balykchi, Ishtyhan, Yakkabag, Kasb, Urganch, Gijduvan, Peshku, Quyichirchiq and Dustlik districts.

Karimov also noted that farmers kept 4.09 million tons of grain, or 60 percent of the total crops, after fulfilling the national quota.

About 41,000 farms specialize in cotton and grain production, over 22,000 in gardening and viticulture, 4,000 in vegetable and fruit growing, 6,000 in cattle breeding and 6,000 in other crops.
