The Azerbaijani Labor and Social Protection Ministry jointly with the World Bank (WB) has started the development of professional and educational standards in accordance with ISCO88/08 (International Standard Classification of Occupations). The work is carried out in the framework of the WB joint project on development of social protection, Deputy Labor and Social Protection Minister Natig Mammadov said on Tuesday.

"The country together with the German consultancy Gopa launched a project that will promote the development of the labor market in Azerbaijan and strengthening of the labor potential, as well as meet employers' demand for skilled labor force," Mammadov said.

He said the introduction of new professional standards is important both for employers and job seekers.

WB expert John Curley said this project aims to close cooperation with local businesses, as the development of standards requires involvement of 10-15 companies operating in all sectors of the economy.

"The introduction of these standards will have its positive impact on both the private and the public sector of the economy. In addition, the standards will be constantly updated in compliance with changes in international professional standards," Curley said.

The project was launched in July 2010 and its completion is scheduled for November 2013. Some 200 professional standards, 200 assessment standards and 100 training standards will be developed under the project on improved professional standards in accordance with ISCO88/08.  The project also provides for opening of the center of professional standards.
