WB allocates funds to expand Georgian infrastructure development project

The World Bank Board of Directors has approved $45 million in additional funding for Georgia to implement a regional and municipal infrastructure development project.

"With the view to expand the project, the Georgian government has requested additional funding to be directed at restoring municipal services and infrastructure, as well as developing plans to strategically develop selected cities," the bank said in a report.

Initially, the WB allocated $40 million to the project, which aimed to reduce damages to the Georgian economy in the aftermath of the the Georgian-South Ossetian conflict.

The project was approved by the WB Board of Directors on Oct. 2, 2008.

Additional funding worth $33.5 million was provided for the project by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The International Development Association also provided $11.5 million in funding.

"The project will benefit tens of thousands of Georgian families," WB Directorfor South Caucasus Assad Alami said. "Georgia is expected to restore local roads, provide a water system and improve sanitation system. Restoring infrastructure and improving the living conditions of those affected by the conflict will continue with EU co-financing."
