According to the NGO'Center for Economic Research', the inflation rate in Azerbaijan amounted to 1.73 percent in January 2011. Consumer prices in Baku last month increased by 2.24 percent, 1.23 percent - in the regions of the country, the NGO said.

Inflation in the country hit 12.18 percent over a year.

In January, the largest price increase among foodstuffs was observed on onions - 25.76 percent, nuts - 10.67 percent and sugar - 3.2 percent. Price increase among non-food items is observed on scarves at 10.87 percent. A significant decline in prices was observed on tomatoes - 5.66 percent and biscuits - 4.8 percent.

In services sphere, the tariffs for domestic passenger traffic fell by 26.69 percent.

According to the Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee, consumer prices and tariffs for services in January 2011 rose by 0.8 percent compared to December 2010 and by 8.3 - January 2010. Food prices rose by 1.5 percent and prices or industrial goods remained unchanged, while the rates for services fell by 0.4 percent. Compared to January 2010, the food prices rose by 3.7 percent and nonfood - 2.8 percent, while tariffs in the service sector decreased by 0.5 percent.
