Some 2.5 billion tons of cargo has been transported in the Azerbaijani transport sector over the past 20 years, State Statistics Committee Chairman Arif Veliyev said in his speech at a scientific symposium today.
"The number of passengers using the services of the transport sector increased by 421.3 million people compared to 1991," Veliyev said.
He said as of early 2011 the number of vehicles in Azerbaijan amounted to 982,600 units. Their number has increased by 589,600 units over 20 years.
Some 725,800 of the total number of vehicles are private. If in the early years of the restoration of independence, 18 vehicles accounted for every 100 persons, at present 40 cars account for every 100 people.
