Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, Feb. 2 / Trend H. Hasanov /

A regional conference was recently held in Ashgabat with experts and consultants from Central Asia, Russia, Ukraine, an official Turkmen source said today.

The forum was organised as part of a joint project of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Turkmenistan. On the agenda were ways of creating the mechanisms to improve energy saving and energy generation from renewable sources.

According to a statement, talks are taking place within this programme to develop and implement the first projects using the carbonic fund, established under the Kyoto Protocol. This step will allow financial backing while introducing energy efficient technologies, as modern technologies can reduce consumption, or prevent the energy loss, particularly natural gas. This, in turn, reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

'The carbon fund has already proved its efficiency and financial attractiveness in China, Brazil and a number of other countries', the statement said.

Moreover, it could enable the possibility of cooperation in the development of alternative and renewable energy sources, particularly wind energy within the UNDP programme. The joint project 'Improvement of energy efficiency in Turkmenistan's residential buildings' was presented during the conference.
