Syria's major sugar producer stops its activity

The Syrian National Sugar Company stopped sugar production due to ongoing unrest in the country, the company's website reports with reference to its leader Mohammad Najib Al-Isaf on Monday.

He said the company's production rate decreased during the last two months.
This company is the major sugar producer in Syria. It produces annually about one million tons of sugar. The company also has a plant with capacity of 2,500 tons of sugar per day.

Sugar consumption in Syria is 800,000 tons annually. Part of the produced sugar is exported.

Anti-government protests, which began in mid-March, continue in Syria for already ten months. Daily reports are received about death of people - both civilians and security forces. According to the UN statistics, the total number of victims in the country exceeds 5,000 people. The Syrian authorities accuse armed militants of the clashes, who receive assistance from neighboring countries.
