In the next five years, share of non-cash payments in Azerbaijan will increase by several times, head of payment systems and account department at the Central Bank of Azerbaijan (CBA) Kamala Gurbanova told Trend on Saturday.

"We plan to reach the level of the Baltic States and the Middle East countries within the next five years under the new program on the development of the country's non-cash payments for 2012-2016," Gurbanova said.

She said share of non-cash payments in these countries now hits about 40-45 per cent, whereas in Azerbaijan the figure hits 3.5 percent.

"We can achieve similar results by carrying out complex activities envisaged under the program. In addition, today the country has established a strong infrastructure, it needs only more expansion in the regions, attracting the relevant structures to it," Gurbanova said.

The CBA has completed a draft state program on development of the country's non-cash payments for 2012-2016. The main directions of the program is to expand the infrastructure for electronic payments, strengthening institutional base, increase efficiency of their use, conduct enlightenment activity, more active involvement of population and economic entities in the use of these services.
